It's been a interesting and fun spring/summer this year. We have had a wonderful breeding season for several species of birds and animals. This year, two Tree Swallows took nesting in one of two birdhouses. It was wonderful catching glimpses of them busy at work, first prepping the nest box & then bringing the food to the youngsters. I am not exactly sure how many little ones there were, They are gone now. The tree swallow usually has 4-6 eggs. The incubation period lasts between 13-16 days and then the fledging period is 20-24 days. Both the female and male feed the young. They worked consistently all day long. They feed on insects. The tree swallow does migrate to Mexico and Central America. It was the first time we have had Tree Swallows use our birdhouse. They were first seen in the early Spring. One minute they were here and the next moment they were gone. I am not sure exactly what happened, I like to think they just all went on their way, but after they left I did see a Turkey Vulture resting atop of the house, which gave me a thought that perhaps he was there in prior days and had a meal. Turkey Vultures are not known to check nest boxes, they tend to go for the roadkill. It was a fun and interesting observation period. Looking forward to next year to perhaps their return!
