Hello Mr Praying Mantis - Photography by Karol Livote
This guy was a summer resident last year in my garden. The Praying Mantis officially became the Connecticut State Insect on October 1, 1977. The mantis can stand on his four hind legs, with the two highly specialized forelegs raised as if he was praying. That is where the name came from.
The mantis have long necks topped by a triangular head. They can turn their heads 180 degrees—an entire half circle. They're well-camouflaged, adapting colors that help them blend with plants. They feed on aphids, flies, grasshoppers, small caterpillars and moths. I have seen them also eat large butterflies and bees.
